Those fabulous pinup girls!

I don't know about you, but I love those vintage pinup girls from yesteryear! They ooze sex appeal, confidence and strength. Here are a few of my favorite artists and their artwork.

Joyce Ballantyne (1918 - 2006)
Joyce Ballantyne was a noteworthy member of the "girl's club" among pin-up artists - her women were often more natural than the studiously coy poses of her male counterparts.

Gil Elvgren (1914-1980)
Gil Elvgren was one of the most important and best loved pin-up artists of the twentieth century.

Earl MacPherson (1910 - 1993)
By 1939 Earl MacPherson was an aspiring glamour artist with a studio on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

Robert Skemp (1910 - 1984)
Skemp and fellow Sundblom protégés like Gil Elvgren, Al Buell, and Joyce Ballantyne, modeled their art in large part on that of the older artist. During his pin-up and glamour career, Skemp worked for several major publishing houses, but his original paintings are very rare today.

Alberto Vargas (1896 - 1982)
From the time Esquire first introduced America to the Varga Girl in 1940, the name Vargas has been synonymous with pin-up and glamour art.

Billy De Vorss (d.1985)
Billy De Vorss created lush and vibrant pin-ups, often inspired by New York's theatres and nightclubs.

These are just the tip of the iceberg! I found a wonderful site The Pin-up Files that has hundreds of various pinup girl artwork...check it out.

Vintage Lingerie Labels

Vintage Lingerie by Sweet Cherry Vintage Lingerie: Vintage Lingerie Labels:

The following are still in production to this day:
Bali -1930's
Barbizon -1920's
Hollywood Vassarette (Munsingwear) - 1940's to still in production just under the name Vassarette
Frederick's of Hollywood - 1930's or 40's
Gilead -1950's
Komar - 1950's
Lily of France - late 1800's
Olga - 1948 still in production (although her nightgowns went out of production in the late 80's to early 90's). Rule of thumb, gowns with the 5 digit style numbers are 80's gowns. 4 Digit style numbers are earlier (usually 1970's), and Olga NEVER created nightgowns prior the mid/late 1960's. All her items were foundations/panty-slips prior to that.
Miss Elaine - 1920's
Rago: unknown
Shadowline - 1940's
Val Mode - Late 1930's
Vanity Fair - 1899
Victoria's Secret (started as a mail order catalog) in the 1970's
Warner - 1930's (interesting side note, Warner's invented the A,B,C,D Bra Cup sizing)
Wondermaid - 1930's or 40's

Lucie Ann of Beverly Hills...What's the hubbub all about?

When I first stumbled upon a listing for a Lucie Ann peignoir set, I was astonished at the asking price. Don't get me wrong, her pieces are a work of art and simply breathtaking, but I couldn't help but wonder why her label was so desired above other vintage names.

After some researching, I found that Lucie Ann Lingerie was founded by Lucie Onderwyzer in 1949. Located in Beverly Hills, CA, her glamorous nightgowns and lingerie were worn by Hollywood's glamorous stars such as Elizabeth Taylor. She designed all of the peignoir sets worn by Eva Gabor on the 1960's series Green Acres.

Lucie Ann designs are known for bold color and glamorous details, such a marabou trim, pompoms and rhinestones. They were sold at the upscale and exclusive Beverly Hills boutique, Claire Sandra of Beverly Hills.

After Lucie Onderwyzer passed away in 1988 (at the age of 75), Lucie Ann Lingerie was sold to Deena Lingerie Company. Deena Lingerie began producing the "Lucie Ann II" line in 1990. In 1996, Deena Lingerie, along with the Lucie Ann line was sold to Lady Ester Lingerie Company. Lady Ester is still manufacturing lingerie, including the Lucie Ann line, along with other well known names such as Val Mode, Perfectform and Wondermaid. Lucie Ann II Fashion sleepwear, leisure and lounge wear is sold today in major chain stores, department and specialty stores.

Bingo! Now it all makes since!

How to make a bra out of two handkerchiefs, c1921

How to make a 'camisole'(in fact an early bra) out of a pair of handkerchiefs. It may be similar to the one made by the New York socialite, Mary Phelps-Jacob, - later patented by her, with a more complex form - in 1914. Almost certainly the model wears it over her shift for reasons of cinematic propriety. British Pathe archivist dates it to around 1921.

Vintage Lingerie Display Ads

The one thing I enjoy most about researching lingerie is finding ads for pieces or labels that I have and being taken back in time, if just for a moment.  Here are some of my favorites that I've found along the way, and I hope you enjoy them too!
